Move-Out Cleaning Checklist: What Is Included?

A move-out clean is different from a regular clean because the home is empty. With the furniture and belongings gone, you can reach inside cabinets, along every baseboard and into corners that are normally covered. It is also the clean that matters most when you are handing a home back to a landlord or over to a buyer. Use this checklist to plan your final clean.

Before the clean

• Move everything out first, including items stored in closets and cabinets

• Take out all trash and recycling

• Check your lease or sale agreement for any specific cleaning requirements

• Make sure the water and electricity are still on for cleaning day

Kitchen

• Wipe inside and outside all cabinets and drawers

• Clean the stovetop, knobs, range hood and backsplash

• Clean inside the microwave and the outside of appliances

• Clean the fridge inside and out once it has been emptied

• Scrub the sink and faucet

• Wipe counters and mop the floor, including edges

Bathrooms

• Scrub the tub, shower, tile and grout

• Remove soap scum and water spots from glass and fixtures

• Clean the toilet inside and out, including the base

• Wipe inside the vanity, medicine cabinet and drawers

• Clean mirrors and wash the floor

Bedrooms and living areas

• Dust ceiling fans and light fixtures

• Wipe baseboards, door frames, doors and light switches

• Dust blinds and window sills

• Clean closet shelves and floors

• Vacuum carpets and mop hard floors

Spots that are easy to miss

• Inside drawers and the top shelves of closets

• Behind where the fridge and stove sat, if they were moved

• Window tracks and sliding door tracks

• Air vents and return grilles

• Marks on walls near light switches and door handles
